The Metamorphic Marvel

Limestone when cooked under pressure for eons changes into Earth’s defacto sculpture medium.

Marble is the stone of choice for classical sculpture and it is no accident that so many works beyond the scope of price come to be made from it.

It’s lustre increases with touch over time and it’s amorphous matrix, when fashioned by the hand of an accomplished carver, is able to capture detailed forms with near divine perfection.

As sculptors, to work with marble is to experience timeless professional practice and one approaches the working of it with careful determination to remain focused and at the peak of ability throughout the piece.

Each precious fragment deserves detailed forethought and our rotary diamond tipped tools are more often substituted for claw chisels, hand cut riflers and wet and dry sand paper when working in this medium.

Marble is fairly rare in the Hebrides, found in two locations on Skye and in a few small locations on some other Isles e.g Iona.

Our white marbles come from the Isle of Harris, gifted from a tiny seam and treated by us as a precious and special resource. We find these to be some of the most fascinating of their type to be found anywhere in Scotland through their intimate association with South Harris’s magnificent igneous complex.
