FAQ
Do you ship to my country?
We ship to most places worldwide.
Simply enter your address at checkout to see if we have shipping to your country set up already.
If your country is not listed, please let us know (info@gneiss-things.com) and we can add it to our website (we build and manage this ourselves so you will always deal with just the two of us).
PLEASE NOTE: Any VAT, Customs and Duty due when ordering from overseas is the responsibility of the buyer and charges have changed since Brexit. We are unable to advise on the cost of this as each country will have it’s own approach to this. Relevant information for your country should be accessible online so we would advise that explore this before purchase.
What payment methods do you accept?
Our website accepts payments from major credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express
We also accept Paypal payment.
If you are unable to use the above payment methods, please get in touch - although web payment is preferred, we are willing to discuss alternative options.
Do you provide prices in USD/Euros/other currencies?
Our website only allows us to take payments in GBP at present.
However, we welcome customers from all over the world and would recommend the following website to find out the current currency conversion rates: https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter
What is ‘Gneiss’? And how do you pronounce it?
Gneiss is a geological name for a type of rock - in the Outer Hebrides this is Lewisian Gneiss and makes up much of the bedrock of these islands.
Gneiss is pronounced as ‘nice’.
Hence, “Gneiss Things”
Where are you based and do you have a store I can visit?
We are based on the Isle of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
We have a post-carving studio in West Harris which is open to visitors from 10am to 4pm, Thursday to Saturday.
Studio 1, Old Seilebost School, West Harris, HS3 3HP
What are the dimensions of ‘X’ piece?
We are working on adding dimensions to all of our pendants, it is a gruelling process as each item is a one-off.
If your chosen piece does not currently state dimensions, please do drop me a line and I will measure any work you are interested in.
What are your pieces made of?
All of our work is carved from the natural stones of the Outer Hebrides.
Pendants/necklaces: Hebridean rock, imitation leather (waxed cotton/polyester)
Keyrings: Hebridean rock, copper
Earrings: Hebridean rock, stirling silver
Light pulls: Hebridean rock, natural twine
Vessels/cubes: Hebridean rock
Are your pieces vegan friendly?
All of our stone pieces are vegan friendly.
Our regular pendants, keyrings and light pulls come with vegan friendly packaging as standard.
Our boxed work (earrings, bowls & special collection pendants) will come with either Harris Tweed or a vegan friendly, plastic free lining - you will be prompted to choose at time of purchase.
As one of us is vegan, we are happy to discuss any requirements or questions you may have in this regard :)
Are your pieces environmentally friendly?
We source all of our rock with a view to minimal impact and eco-sensitivity and the packaging for each piece is plastic-free, hand-stamped and hand made.
We use environmentally friendly cording and packaging materials which are all either recycled or biodegradable.
We have changed our ‘jiffy’ postal bags to a paper alternative with no plastic - hurrah!
Our silver and copper is bought from a UK based supplier and if any overseas materials are needed, these are often bought in larger quantities in order to reduce our carbon footprint by doing this in one order.
Our electricity comes predominantly from renewable/green sources.
The piece I liked is sold, do you have another one the same?
All of our pieces are free carved by hand and therefore unique.
However, please do contact us as we may have something, or be able to produce something, which is similar to the piece you are interested in. Links, serial numbers or photographs help with this.
I would like to buy rough rock - can you send me some?
As artists, we sell only our carved work - we are open to discussing commissions of pieces (see below) but we do not sell rough rock currently.
I would like a custom piece - can you make it?
We are always happy to discuss your ideas for custom pieces and designs.
We ask that, if your piece differs to what we currently offer, as a first step you provide drawings of the piece you wish to commission and any appropriate measurement, plus details of the rock type you are looking for.
I own a store and would like to become a stockist of Gneiss Things products
Fantastic! We love hearing from potential stockists and retailers and are always looking to share our work further afield.
Just drop us a line with information about your store at: info@gneiss-things.com
Who makes Gneiss Things pieces?
We are a creative couple working out of our home studio/workshop in the Isle of Harris.
Every single piece you see on our website and in stores is made only by the two of us, from start to finish.
We share in the carving, metalwork and overall business journey of Gneiss Things. Within this we also have individual strengths that we bring to the work and bounce ideas off one another until the early hours at times!
We also are nature fanatics, art lovers, musicians and food enthusiasts.
We prefer to let the work speak for itself so you won’t find personal details online, but do drop us a line as we’re always keen to talk to customers, you will usually reach me (Suzanne).
You may also find me at various craft markets in Harris and Lewis during the Spring and Summer seasons and I am always happy to get to know visitors and locals to our beautiful islands.
I have an issue with a product from Gneiss Things - what should I do?
We are sorry you have had problems - we take pride in offering well made products.
Please get in touch with us at info@gneiss-thing.com and we will always work with you to solve any issues experienced with our work.
When should I expect my order?
When we receive an order, we endeavour to post this as soon as possible within 3days - we have largely reduced our post office trips to two per week unless an expedited delivery is requested.
In Harris, our local postal office is closed on a Saturday afternoon and all Sunday - in these cases we will post your item on Monday morning.
We post all items via Royal Mail unless indicated otherwise and send these by tracked delivery. You will receive a tracking number once we have posted your item.
I need to send an item to you
